Labor unions dominate Illinois politics, so far be it from elite academia to be left out. Last week Northwestern University graduate students voted 1,644 to 114 to unionize, joining the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America. According to the Daily Northwestern, the “graduate workers” platform goals include “competitive pay,” “professional standards” in labs and classrooms, “power to address misconduct” as well as “comprehensive healthcare” and financial support for international students. Does this include scholarships for students from China?
